Writing a textbook for the United States History survey course is an enormous undertaking, and I am grateful to the many people who helped make it possible. I want to start by thanking Cathy Matson, my co-author on a previous version of this material, The American Experiment, for the many and important contributions still reflected in these pages. I am also grateful to Dustin Mack, a colleague at the University of Oklahoma and now Chief Curator for the History Museum at the Castle in Appleton, Wisconsin. Dustin read every chapter of the book and offered a number of constructive suggestions, including many of the primary sources linked to throughout the digital version of the text.
